Joel Williams — Roots on Routes is proud to announce a new partnership with Joel Williams, an independent plant and soil health educator and consultant based in Ontario. Joel integrates soil chemical and biological assessments, along with plant nutritional analyses, as a joined-up strategy for managing crop production. He has a keen interest in managing plant diversity, soil microbial ecology and plant and soil nutrition to optimize soil function and crop immunity. Joel has a passion for teaching and sharing both scientific and practical information on soil health and agroecology and has lectured to farming audiences internationally.

In partnership with Roots on Routes, Joel will play a key role in educating community members and workshop audiences throughout 2020. He will field questions during the community’s live online discussion groups and share his knowledge base with the group.

Brenda Tjaden — As the founder of Roots on Routes, Brenda has a long history helping western Canadian farms respond to emerging profit opportunities in growing and marketing  their crops. In the process of founding Roots on Routes, Brenda spent the past 3 years researching sustainability protocols and the organic value chain, their opportunities and vulnerabilities. She also pursued an education in soil health and regenerative agriculture and continues to build out her network in this field. Previously, Brenda worked as a professional grain marketing and policy analyst, educator and farm management expert. Brenda has always been an active volunteer in her local community, a nature enthusiast and a keen follower of global economic trends. Brenda is dedicating the next chapter of her career to the positive stories in farming, reuniting commercial agriculture with environmental  consciousness, and helping to create a safe, nutritious supply of food for all.

Tamara McLellan — as Roots on Routes’s marketing and events expert, Tamara has a decade of experience in marketing and communications and after seeing the world and working on humanitarian projects in Africa, India, Nepal, and Central America, she’s more recently turned her interest and efforts to regenerative agriculture. She’s passionate about connecting people through storytelling, mindfulness, and events around food, and spends much of her time in the forest with a deep reverence for the interconnected web of soil, plants and the earth.

AMY AND DON NIKKEL

Adagio Acres

Amy and Donald Nikkel farm with their young family near Lundar, Manitoba.  They are proud to farm organically, without chemical inputs. Their farm consists of small fields interspersed with marsh, forest, and natural grasslands, which enables biodiversity and healthy ecosystems to thrive.  The ancient variety of "naked" oats that they grow are minimally processed, which reduces the carbon footprint of your morning porridge.  They work with a network of organic farmers around Manitoba to reduce on-farm food loss, by cleaning and milling small batches of beans, lentils and pulse products that would otherwise be forgotten by conventional large scale food systems.
